Altus innovations - temporary power generation
project
Altus innovations technical staff have been involved in numerous industrial power engineering applications, including the design, project management and procurement of power generating station packages with associated protection and distribution systems.
One such project commissioned our staff to undertake design, engineering and project management for a containerised power station package for Sri Lanka CEB across three sites at 60MW rating, 33kV to alleviate a shortage in grid power because of an abnormally long dry season which resulted in a loss of hydro electric grid power.
The full package consisted of 86 containerised de-rated diesel generator sets coupled to 15 containerised transformers, grouped into smaller sub-section to ensure the required balance between site protection and continuity of supply.
This ensured that in the event of an internal electrical fault within the power station, the protection system would only remove the minimum of generator capacity required to render the fault isolated whilst the remaining generation would continue to feed power to the grid.
Similar temporary power station projects have been undertaken for Kenya Power & Lighting Corporation.

Altus staff undertake engineering design and fault analysis for grid connected permanent and temporary connected power station packages, including specifying protection equipment, and creating schedules of protection settings.
We also supply engineering, detailed design, procurement, commissioning and maintenance services for any power generation project.
On a project such as this protection systems become the most critical aspect, and in the event of a fault occuring, these have to determine whether the station can continue to keep supply full power output, reduce power output or halt power output altogether. These scenarios obviously impact on the feasibility of the project financially, and require serious consideration at an early design stage.
Our staff worked on this project from initial conception, and provided technical support to the client throughout project duration until final commissioning.
